Agnone
There are many names which boasts Agnone:
- "The Sannio's Athens" thanks to high culture people who have lived there, as prominent intellectuals, doctors, philosophers, theologians and jurists;
- "Agnone: Royal Town" already known by this name in 1600 thanks to its size and economic importance;
- "Old Aquilonia" since it is assumed that the village is built on the ruins of the Samnite city of Aquilonia, destroyed by the Romans during the conquest of Sannio;
- "The Town of the Bells" being the home of the most ancient bell foundry of the world;
- "Agnone: City of Art" thanks to the widespread presence of artistic beauty.
As soon as you arrive in our small medieval town, dominating from the top of the hill on the Verrino valley, you can just be astonished by the beauties of the place.
A combination of monuments and art masterpieces from the twelfth century to the present makes Agnone one of 'most' beautiful towns in Molise.
Walking around the village you can admire a succession of picturesque alleys and squares of high artistic value thanks to the presence of decorated portals and stone facades.
There are different styles that we can recognize, from Romanic architecture to Gothic to Renaissance Baroque.
Altissima espressione dell'arte in Agnone sono le innumerevoli chiese che incontriamo: 17 solo nel centro abitato ed altre cinque nella periferia.
The highest expression of art in Agnone is the many churches that meet in a small area: 17 in town and another five in the periphery.
Noteworthy are the noble’s mansions still showing precious bas-reliefs, helping to strengthen the artistic character of the town.
Three of the seven gates to the village are still visible: the Arc Semiurno, St. Nicholas' Door and the St. Emidio's Door.
In addition to the artistic heritage, and not less important, Agnone boasts strong culinary traditions such as the production of dairy goods
(the typical “stracciata agnonese” and “caciocavallo” cheese) and desserts (like the Bell, the Tina and the holidays sweets).
And finally the bells…everybody steps in Agnone has to visit the most ancient foundry of the world: the Papal Foundry Marinelli handed down from father to son for 44 generations and major cultural destination in Molise.
In short, we keep untouched memories and ancient atmospheres to drive the guest in a magical journey into the past!
